More computer problems

I'm not quite sure why both computers should get major problems (the Sony Vaio has now comprehensively died) at the same time as my car has had to go in for a major repair and I've been off my feet due to doctor's orders for three weeks.

Do you think it's infectious?

Anyway, just to say what limited computing time I have at the moment is going to be devoted to finding a new computer!

The launch of the new blog will now be delayed until I've got a reliable, stable computer.

Recommendations below please!

  1. I am running for cover saying this ... but do look into getting a Mac. There is a lot of yaada yaada on the pros and cons but I am still running on mine whilst friends have gone hunting for new pcs for a surprising variety of problems.

  2. Lorna - the problem is all the existing software I have. When you change systems it's not just the hardware...........

  3. Sorry you are having problems. I know at least one other friend who just had to replace hers. Seems to be that time of year. I think I will say a little prayer for mine.

  4. The Toshiba Satellite I bought seems to be a good make and has good reviews. A 17 inch screen makes it a bit less portable, but the graphics are wonderful.

I've ordered a little (8.5 inch) Dell Mini to take with me and do basics with.

  5. As far as a lap top, we are using several dell vostros and have for a few years. I wonder if your crashes have anything to do with the April 1st virus threat someone made aimed at Microsoft software. Best of luck and sorry you are having such rotten luck.

  6. I agree with Lorna the techies can help with adapting all the software, their customer relations is real easy and always available. I don't work for them, I don't know anybody that has had any problems yet (I count in years) this is the hunt for "red october" otherwise, good luck. I though Viao was good go figure

  7. When it rains, it pours...sorry to hear of the onslaught.

This is a second on the Toshiba Satellite. I have one, with a 17 inch screen also, absolutely love it. Haven't had any problems.

  9. I think Lorna is right. Buy a newer Mac and you can run a full version of Microsoft Vista on it (or earlier Windows OS if you choose). The Intel Macs will run the Windows operating system without a hitch. You can install all your Windows programs and files. You get the reliability of Mac hardware, excellent Apple support plus an enormous user community online. Many Windows only users have made the switch. They never have to run a Mac program if they don't want to.

  10. It could certainly be a malware problem. I had trouble not long ago with it. Malware tends to make you think you have a gremlin on board. Things will run fine for a few days, then trouble. I have excellent security but this bugger got past it somehow. Then it kept trying to shut down my anti-virus and firewall.

Btw, what browser do you use?

  11. I have two Acers and would recooend the brand. I have had one of them for a couple of years and I have had very few problems and nothing I could not sort out. THinking about it, I probably caused the problems....I do like to tinker. I have now got an Acer netbook as well which is proving equally good....touchwood.

  12. I am sorry to hear you are all 'sick'. I've heard of viruses crossing species, but two computers, a car and a human?! Maybe it's just a bad case of Murphy's law.

How old is the laptop? Could be one piece that is failing on it, like the graphics card. Do you have a tame geek that can check it out for you?

If you're interested in converting, you can now run Windows and their software on a Mac. Still leaves you open to viruses but might help during the software conversion time. And yes, I'm a Mac. We changed six years ago and haven't looked back.

  13. Dont get a mac, blogging is much harder, you cant cut and paste for some reason and other things. I have just swapped from mac to pc after 11 years. Macs are beautiful and lovely to work on but expensive. I upgrade my computer every three years, I now have a very big, twin screen, dogs b.....ks of a computer, getting used to it not being a mac, everything to do with the internet is easier. I had it made for me, so it isnt a name, its a heinz 57, but great...ha, that wasnt much help was it!

  14. I'm sorry to hear things are not so good - I hope the sun start shining on you again real soon. I use an HP desktop, and a Toshiba laptop (neither very new these days) and find them both reliable. I had a Compac laptop and it was truly dreadful and to be avoided at all costs!

  15. I find blogging simple on a Mac and I can cut and paste. But I know hubby was a mac convert then went back to being a PC convert, however for the last week he's been dealing with horrendous PC virus problems whereas I haven't had any problems for several years. Having said that I'd say that Macs are not the beautiful, perfect way superior computers they were about ten years ago - though they still have the edge on not getting viruses.
