Two opportunities to be Wildlife Artist of the Year 2011!

The closing date for entries for two wildlife art competitions are fast approaching. Deadlines and entry conditions are detailed below for :

Wildlife Artist of the Year 2011 (David Shepherd Foundation)


There are five categories for entries
  • Endangered Wildlife - any wild animal or plant that is threatened or endangered nationally or internationally 
  • Wild Places - any scene or landscape showing the natural environment at its most beautiful or dramatic 
  • Wildlife in Action - any wild animal jumping, fighting, flying or any other interesting behaviour
  • Wildlife in 3D - sculpture in any medium 
  • Open - let your imagination go wild!
The competition is open to all professional and amateur artists aged 17 and over.  The top prize is £10,000 and all shortlisted artists are exhibited at the Wildlife Artists of Year 2011 Exhibition at the Mall Galleries 7 - 11 June 2011

BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2011

This is the second year of this competition.  In its first year this competition:
  • attracted 500+ entries from all over the world.
  • 100 were included in the final selection from which the category winners were chosen
  • Natalie Mascall won the title ‘BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2010’ for her 'Tigers at Play' and a place on Wildlife Worldwide’s Festival of Wildlife 2011 in Baja California, Mexico. Her winning work was also displayed at the Society of Wildlife Artists exhibition ‘The Natural Eye’.
  • All 12 category winners were on display in August 2010 at the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society& (MIWAS) exhibition.
The categories this year are:
  • British Mammals (behaviour and portraits)
  • British Birds (behaviour and portraits)
  • All Other Wildlife (behaviour and portraits, in the UK and worldwide)
  • The Wonder of Plants (British and worldwide)
  • Beneath the Water (marine and fresh water)
  • Animals in their Environment (British and worldwide)
  • World Mammals (behaviour and portraits)
  • World Birds (behaviour and portraits)
  • Black and White Nature (pencil, lino cuts, etchings, wood block etc)
  • Visions of Nature (innovative, creative impressions of wildlife)
  • Frozen Planet (please note: entries must feature animal life)
  • Endangered Species (entries must feature species listed by the IUCN as ‘Endangered’ or ‘Critically Endangered’)
  • International Artists – a category judged digitally, exclusively for artists outside of the UK. This is to save our international entrants the great costs of sending artwork to the UK.
Note that the competition is not just limited to wildlife animals.

The main prize is a holiday to Borneo organised by Wildlife Worldwide and the Sabah Tourist Board

This a link to the terms and conditions for entering the competition.  In brief:
  • Artwork must feature wildlife – birds, mammals, waterlife, invertebrates and plants – in a natural or captive environment. 
  • The competition is open to adults aged 18 and over
  • The number of entries is limited to a maximum of 8 and you can only enter one artwork per category
  • The artwork must have been created in the past year and be your original work.
  • You must be 
    • EITHER the sole author and owner of the copyright of all artwork entered 
    • OR if your work is copied from a photograph(s) that is/are not your own, you must have sole permission in writing from the copyright owner to use his/her work.
